About the Recipe
Burger Steak is a beloved Filipino fast-food dish that combines the savory goodness of a beef patty with a rich and creamy mushroom gravy. Inspired by the popular Filipino chain Jollibee, this dish is the perfect comfort food. It’s simple to make and brings together the delightful flavors of umami-rich beef and smooth mushroom sauce, making it a hit for any meal. Serve it with rice, and you’ll have an easy and satisfying dish that reminds you of home.
Ingredients
For the Burger Patties:
500g ground beef (preferably 80% lean, 20% fat)
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 egg
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons cooking oil (for frying)
For the Mushroom Gravy:
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups beef broth
1/2 cup evaporated milk or heavy cream
1/2 cup sliced button mushrooms (canned or fresh)
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation
1. Prepare the Burger Patties:
In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, finely chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, soy sauce, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Combine everything until just mixed—don’t overwork the meat.
Shape the mixture into 4-6 patties, depending on the size you prefer.
Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they’re browned and cooked through. Once done, set them aside on a plate.
2. Make the Mushroom Gravy:
In the same pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and stir continuously for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps from forming. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce starts to thicken.
Add the sliced mushrooms, evaporated milk (or heavy cream), soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine.
Let the gravy simmer for another 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reaches your desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
3. Serve:
Pour the rich mushroom gravy over the burger patties.
Serve hot with steamed rice or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.
Enjoy your homemade Jollibee-style Burger Steak! It’s perfect for a cozy dinner or any day when you crave a taste of this Filipino favorite.
